Students began the relay with one pin on the pin deck. Each time they knocked down all their pins, they were able to add another pin. The relay was over when a team has all ten pins on the pin deck and someone on their team bowls a strike.

We had to take a break from our Volleyball Unit due to availability of the bowling lanes. A big THANK YOU to Park Center Lanes for sharing their bowling lanes with us so that our students can have a more realistic experience in our bowling unit:)
We learned that there are 3 different ways to hold your hands during a forearm pass or bump: interlock, palms up or wrap around. Ask your child to show you which way they picked. The students would make a "v" with their arms, bend their knees, and meet the ball on their forearms on the way up. They practice their passing with several activities: toss bump catch, bump continuously, toss to a friend, wall passing, bumping back and forth as well as playing a game of bumping it over the net. The students would all bump over the net, the students earned a point for their team if it went over the net. Warm up this week was partner balloon races. They were asked to move the balloon with their partner without using their hands or letting the balloon drop. The 3 week volleyball unit is broken down into 3 skills: serving, passing and setting. At the end of class we have a competition of accuracy and form using the specific skill we are working on. The students who win are awarded a certificate.
Toss Bump Clap Catch and Toss Clap 360 catch
Bump is another name for the forearm pass in volleyball. This week we focused on serving:
*staggering their feet with striking side back * facing the target with knees slightly bent *hold the ball in the non-striking hand in front of the body on the striking side at waist level *eyes on ball *Swinging arm back at a 45 degree angle *Striking the ball with palm open and fingers together *following through Below is Mrs. Dunn's class first day of volleyball. The K-1 students began with a balloon workout. Here are some examples of what they were asked to do using their balloon: stand in front of, stand behind, walk backwards, straddle, jog around, hop on one foot, jump over, gallop around your neighbors, skip around, crab walk around, frog jumps, make a bridge, leap over, run around, bear walk, jumping jacks next to etc. They learned that the word volley means to Keep it Up in the air. They practiced volleying using different body parts such as finger, head, knee, toe, hands, elbow. We practice our serving form using balloons. Last they learned that in volleyball the ball must go over the net so we played a game of clean your room. All of Mrs. Hendges' Class Survived the 5 Minute Challenge:) Ask your child/ren if they survived? As the challenges begin to get more difficult, please practice at home to build up endurance!
K-1 workout is on the top part of the paper and 2-4 is on the lower portion
For this warm up exercise there were 2 taggers known as the the heart breakers. Cupid wore the red cape and would go around and give valentines to the students who were tagged. Once they received a valentine they had to go put it into a red box and complete an exercise and then return to the game💘
We concluded our basketball unit by having a champion ball tournament (very similar to lightening). Here is a slideshow of the boys and girls from each class who won:)
Below you will find short clips from the classes of Mrs. Merrill and Mrs. Copus in a dribbling game. There were 2 villains who went around and tagged people while there were 2 superheroes wearing yellow capes that would run around saving people. If the dribblers were tagged, they would have to knee dribble until the superhero tagged them.
This week we focused on our shooting skills for all grade levels. There were modifications with size and type of ball being used as well as adding one or two hula hoop attached to the basketball rim. We focused on balancing the ball next to the eye, bending our knees, eyes on target, extending the elbow (elevator), following through (cookie jar or gooseneck). Below is a picture of the students playing CHAMPION BALL. Two student's dribble the ball 3X and touch balls, which means "go". The first person to score stays and the other player goes to the end of the line. Make it-Take it---the students worked in team to collect bean bags. They would take turns shooting at their hoop. Each student would get one shot from anywhere, if they would make it, they would go take a bean bag from the middle of the gym and bring it back to their teams bucket, if they missed, they would go to the end of their line. Winning team either had the most or had a specific bean bag in the bucket.
Below is a short video of Mrs. Lichti's class playing one version of the game hot shotz. Poly spots were spread out around the baskets and the students would shoot from the spots, if they made it, they would take it to their teams hula hoop. If they miss, they would try again until all the spot were gone. The helpers for the day, would count to see what team had the most.
Above are the helpers for the day.
This week we began our basketball unit and focused on dribbling. Ask your child what games they got to play....Red Light Green Light? Dribbling Line Tag? Partner Dribbling? Pirate Ship- a game where the students dribbled and stole treasures from the pirate ship and brought them back to their island. If they got tagged by the pirate, they needed to do exercises and then could come back into the game, arrrrg:) While playing each game, we focused on dribbling the ball with our finger pads, keeping it low, knees bent, head up and keeping the ball under control. Everyone in Mrs. Rudolph/Kett's class completed this challenge:) Great Job!!! Ask your child if the were able to complete the challenge???
For our warm-up game we played Mr. and Mrs. Claus Tag. If the students got tagged they sat down and waited for Mr. or Mrs. Claus to come and give them a present (a bean bag) . Once the student received a bean bag, they would run and put it under the tree and re-enter the tagging area. And of course we needed reindeer to guide the sleigh:) Then, we concluded our throwing unit with a game called feed the reindeer where the students would collect food and throw it to their partner who was standing in a hula hoop trying to collect the most food!Students tried to sink each others battleship by using good form to knock down the other teams bowling pins. The ship was sunk once all the pins were down. The last ship with a bowling pin standing won the battle. The balls were the cannons; the scooters were the lifeboats. The lifeboats job was to collect the cannons and bring them to back to their battleship. If they stepped off their ship, they needed to do ABC push ups or 10 push ups to return. The younger students practiced their throwing skills by having a snowball fight! They took turns standing behind the fort:)
I like to start out our throwing unit by setting up different stations. This allows me to assess the students form and help them if they need it:) They practiced throwing different weight and size balls at the different stations and distances as well as playing games while hitting targets.
For our soccer unit we learned many things: 1) we can foot dribble using soft touches on the inside of our foot. 2) we can receive a pass by turning our foot sideways. 3) we can perform a soccer throw in by keeping our feet planted and elbows back. 4) we can tell you what the words offense and defense mean. 5) we can practice our leaping so that we could use our instep kick to score goals. 6) we can pass the ball with the inside of our foot. 7) we use our tricep muscle for throw ins 8) we use our quads for kicking. We were able to play a lot of games to reinforce these skills. Ask your child(ren) about dribble freeze tag, clean your room, Pinball, line soccer, the animal game, dribbling/trapping/scoring goals with a shark in the middle????
Thanksgiving was a good time for me to find out how much your child/ren know about the five food groups. We learned that the protein in turkey helps our muscle to be strong. For more information on the the five food groups click on the link below We played a game of Please Pass the Turkey for our warm up game. If the students got tagged they froze and yelled "Please Pass the Turkey". Whoever had the turkey would come and pass it to them; they would of course say "thank you" and then they would go and give it to someone else. Manners Matter:) Another activity that allowed the students to practice their dodging and fleeing skills was the Turkeys and the Farmers. The students were the turkeys trying to steal the food from the farmers. The farmers were the taggers. If the turkey's got tagged they would have to go and stand on a dinner plate (the circles on the ground). Another turkey could save them by getting to them without being tagged. The turkey's were safe as long as they were standing in their turkey pen.
We began our running challenge. Ask your child(ren) if they were able to complete the challenge? From now on, each day we have a challenge we will gradually increase our minutes. Congratulations to Mrs. Beach's class, they were ALL able to complete the challenge=)
Here is a fun way to get in a good workout. If the students were tagged they would go to a house and say "trick or treat". They could choose to go to the Ab house, Tricep House, Squat House, or Push Up house. The home owner would give them the dice and they would roll to see how many of the exercises they must complete before returning back in the game.
This week we had some fun learning how to cooperate during a relay race. There were ghost hidden under cones at the opposite side of the gym. The students took turns trying to find a ghost . We were able to incorporate locomotor skills, scooters and even got to play in the dark using flashlights. Eeeeek:) |
