The students have been working on their pace all year long. This week was the first challenge. The students in 1st grade-4th were challenged to jog for 5 minutes without stopping, keeping a steady pace. If they survived the challenge, they signed the poster board which will be hung up in the gym. Each month the minutes will increase. It was so much fun! I was so proud of the effort of all the students. It was so enjoyable to see how excited and proud they were when they completed the challenge:) Ask your child if they survived???? See if you can find their name......Mrs. Kooistra's class did what no other class has done before! (That's why the #1) Everyone in the entire class was able to complete the task!!!!

This week the focus was shooting with good form. The word BEEF helps us to remember what good form looks like: B-balance and bend your knees E-elbow under the ball E-extend elbow and eyes on target F-follow through (goose neck). We played a group game of Hot Shotz. There were 5 hoops and they competed to see what team could make it from all their spots first. The all played a game of Make it Take it. The grade levels were modified by the height of the rims and we also added hula hoops to the net for the Kindergarten classes. Students worked in groups of 2/3. They would dribble down and take one shoot. If they made it, they would take a bean bag back to their teams hula hoop. If they missed, they would just dribble back and the next person would go. Here are a few pictures of Mrs. Fisk class practicing line dribbling and playing Make it, Take it!
The students rotated through 5 stations that were modified for each grade level. 1) They practiced walking, jogging, or weaving while dribbling from one side of the gym to another. 2) A stand and dribble station--they worked on dominate and non-dominate hand, "v" dribbling and knee dribbling. 3) Passing station--They practiced their chest passes and bounce passes against the wall. 4) Champion Ball--2 players would dribble 3X, touch balls and then try to get their ball in the hoop first. The winner stays and the other person would go to the end of the line. 5) Hot Shotz--the students would shoot from different circles on the floor. If they would make it from the spot, they would take it. The goal was to have all the circles gone by the time the station ended. Lots of skill practice, Lots of fun:) Here are a few pictures from Mrs. Cook's class.
This week we focused on dribbling with control using the finger-pads (spider on top of the ball), eyes up and keeping the ball below the waist. We played dribble tag. If the students got tagged, they would knee dribble with one hand in the air. When a friend would give them "five" they were back in the game. Bank Robbery was another game we played where the student would take a bean bag out of the middle and bring it back to their teams bank. Once all the money (bean bags) was gone from the middle, they would steal from the other teams bank. We would count at the end to see who had the most money in the bank. Knock out dribbling was another fun game we had a chance to play. There were 2 students who were on defense. All the other students were dribbling, the defense would try to knock the ball away from the dribblers. If a dribbler lost control of their ball, they would go to the wall and knee dribble until the game was over. The game was over when there were only 2 students left. They would then become the next defenders! The students learned how important it is to protect the ball by using their body and arm as a shield.
